Smokey & Me at The Plaza Arts Center

As the story goes, Smokey Robinson, a founder of Motown and one of the producers of Motown: The Musical, went backstage on opening night to look for Charl Brown, the handsome young actor who portrayed him in the show. When he found Charl backstage, he came up to him, smiled and simply said, “Hello, Me!”.
This delightful story became the inspiration for a spectacular show that celebrates the life, music and career of acclaimed singer-songwriter Smokey Robinson, once pronounced by Bob Dylan as America’s “greatest living poet."

Steel Magnolias Auditions

The Plaza Alliance for the Performing Arts (PAPA) will hold auditions for Steel Magnolias by Robert Harling on Sunday afternoon, February 4 from 3:00pm to 4:30 p.m. and also on Tuesday evening, February 6 from 6:00pm to 7:30p.m. in The Plaza Arts Center theater in Eatonton.
The cast consists of six females, ages 19 to 60’s. Since many women do not look their ages, please come meet us and audition regardless of your age. PAPA welcomes newcomers and the directors are always willing to work with those who might be cast in this play and are willing to work hard to learn.
The women in this play are witty, intelligent, and above all, are real people with interesting personality traits. They have a love of life and take on its challenges with gusto.
Rehearsals are typically three times per week and are scheduled according to the work and activity schedules of the cast and directors. Late evening rehearsals are avoided as much as possible.
Steel Magnolias, written by Robert Harling, was first performed on stage in 1987 in New York. The play had great appeal, the rights were quickly purchased, and the movie of the same name hit theaters in 1989. And a true hit it was! Almost 100 million people saw this movie and millions more in the years following.
The story takes place in Truvy’s beauty salon in Chinquapin, Louisiana, where all the ladies who are “anybody” come to have their hair done. The characters are right out of a southern community of close friends who know each other well enough to speak their minds. Helped by her eager new assistant Annell (who is not sure whether or not she is still married), the outspoken, wise-cracking Truvy dispensesmshampoo and free advice to the town’s rich curmudgeon, Ousier. Ousier’ s cover is “I’m not crazy, I’ve just been in a bad mood for 40 years.” An eccentric millionaire is Miss Clairee, who has a raging sweet tooth. She is also the local social leader. M’Lynn whose daughter Shelby (the prettiest girl in town), is about to marry a “good ole boy” worries about what might go wrong.
Filled with hilarious repartee and
many acerbic and humorously revealing verbal collisions, the play moves toward tragedy when the spunky Shelby risks pregnancy and her life for marriage and family. The sudden realization of their mortality affects the others. It also draws out their underlying strength and love.
This play will be directed by Dennis and Dottie McClain, long-time PAPA directors and producers.
The performance dates are scheduled for April 19, 20, 21, 26, and 27 at The Plaza Arts Center.
For any additional information, please call Dottie McClain at 706-473-0326.

The Jazz Legacy Project: Dave Brubeck, Time Out at Festival Hall

One of the most popular jazz artists in the late 50s and 60s, Brubeck’s album “Time Out” is one of the best-selling jazz albums of all time. This show features the songs from this iconic album and chronicles the bold moves Brubeck made during the Civil Rights movement. Featuring Noel Freidline.
The Jazz Legacy Project Series
What is it?
Each program is roughly 90 minutes, with the goal of bringing the casual jazz listener inside the minds and music of the most influential and interesting American musicians of all time. The life and music of the artist/composer is entertainingly narrated by the drummer, Mr. Justin Varnes, and seminal jazz pieces are played to illuminate the narration. These are NOT tribute concerts in the sense that the musicians are trying to recreate the original performances, but instead to celebrate the essence and accomplishments of the particular artist.
Who is it?

Leader Justin Varnes has taught jazz at Emory University, Georgia Tech, and Georgia State University, as well as toured with Earl Klugh, Phoebe Snow, and Mose Allison. His Jazz Legacy Project was sponsored by the Fulton County Public Library system for a year-long series of concerts.
